Lewis Huckstep joins Brad in our latest episode of Real Talk With Outperformers. According to his website, “Lewis is the expert in his field, helping create a life with financial & time freedom for business owners & high level leaders”. Brad explores this synopsis in a face-paced, no BS conversation where Lewis holds nothing back as he describes his journey from an anxious, insecure young boy diagnosed with Asperges to a position of working with business spearheads in the coaching, mindset & leadership space at such a young age.
Here are some highlights from their chat.

The beginning
When asked to describe himself, Lewis talks about his upbringing in Norfolk Island, the challenges he had with learning at school including the time he was expelled from kindergarten, the struggles he had with his emotions and being diagnosed with Asperges and finding an ‘outlet’ through Rugby League. Moving to Australia to complete his schooling, Lewis repeated year 12 to get into university for a career in the fitness industry and after finding a place in a gym franchise, went onto buying 3 of his own with all of them being sold off at the time of recording. All of this by the age of 26!

Shifting Gears
Even though he had 3 successful franchise gyms in his possession, Lewis describes feeling stressed and unhappy, which led him to find another source fulfilment and of course, income and that being his coaching business.
“How do you what you love and become beautifully paid to do it”
But it’s the path in between those steps that is as intriguing as it is almost common in the transitional phase of recognising an issue and working to resolve it. As Brad puts it to him, in his few encounters with Lewis that, he does not come across as insecure in communication. Lewis believes that insecurities and ‘void’ become your gifts because they push you to learn more about the triggers of those notions to better deal with them. And, that’s exactly what he’s done in his personal and professional journey.

“You become the person you needed when you’re at your lowest”

Conversations with yourself on Social Media
Lewis’ presence on social media in particular, Instagram is quite pronounced, with over 160 thousand followers and he says the beginning of this journey was more about ‘talking to himself’ and journaling his experiences for his own pleasure to now turning into a mentor and coach that he believes he needed in his earlier life.
“Those voids become what’s most meaningful to you”.

Values
“Values are the areas in your life which are intrinsically most important to you” – this is what Lewis says ‘values’ mean. For example if someone says that they value “freedom” and believe that that they would spend their free time with their family, friends, traveling and enjoying experiences, then these are the things that they value not the freedom of time.
For Lewis, his values include coaching, mentoring, learning, wealth, friendships, intimate relationships, health and games.

Challenges with relationships
Most of Lewis’s recent content on social media centres around ‘relationships’. When asked why this is a focal point or one of his values, Lewis refers to the volatile relationship between his parents which included emotional and physical abuse. He believes that it’s this void in his life that has been a driving force behind his constant yearning to educate himself about how to get the best out of the different relationships in his personal and professional life.

Vulnerabilities in the workplace
With a common placement of working with leaders in business, Brad and Lewis discuss the different vulnerabilities they identify in the workplace. One the main liabilities that Lewis coaches people on is their mission to grow and change but not knowing where to start. Lewis explains that for high achievers, their successes and achievements become a cocoon for their insecurities and weaknesses, so to develop, people need to look at and educate themselves about those aspects which they hide or shelter from.

Triggers
In a their conversation about the questions Lewis asks his clients initially to identify their concerns, he says that he focuses on triggers for their behaviour or the judgements they pass on the behaviours of those around them. Once they understand what is triggering their response and why it’s prompting their behaviour, they begin to understand and learn what to do to rewire their reactions.

Lewis believes that “Whatever you judge, you attract into your life”, so by coaching people to understand and change their behaviour, there is less appeal to those things that used to be triggering.
