“Culture eats strategy for breakfast” is a widely used saying, and intuitively we know how important a great culture is in mobilising a strategy.
Yet, we have seen at times leaders looking at strategy and culture as separate organisms.
A good strategy is best when it is seen as a critical element of culture. When it is an anchor point to which we are all working towards together. It helps us prioritise. Why should culture and strategy compete or be at odds with one another?
When a Chief People Officer says ‘we are working on culture’, they are really saying ‘we are working on making our strategy easier to execute by optimising the way our people engage with work and the habits they embrace’.
Culture and strategy are symbiotic.
