On this week’s episode of Real Talk With Outperformers, Brad welcomes Kay Lang. Kay is founder and Creative Director of the luxury lingerie brand – Vixen and Fox. Kay has overcome some incredible challenges to reach where she is now – and she is not slowing down! With a strong passion to help every woman unlock and believe in their true individual beauty and power, Kay is making waves in the lingerie industry.


Kay’s Journey to Vixen and Fox

Kay’s journey is an incredible one, filled with unimaginable challenges and strength. Kay's entrepreneurial journey began when she started working for a restaurant called Meat and Wine Co. She started as a cashier and quickly grew within the company, eventually becoming the brand manager by the age of 21, where she would move around and open more stores. This experience allowed her to learn about team building, processes, and procedures, and how to ensure consistency across multiple locations.

However, during this time she became involved romantically with a man, who quickly began showing red flags in their relationship. This relationship would mark the start of a terrible series of events and experiences for Kay.


Kay’s Experience With Sex Trafficking

From the beginning, Kay found herself trapped in a manipulative relationship with her partner. As time passed, it became clear that his plan involved pushing her into the world of escort services, exploiting her financially while claiming to be her "security." He justified his actions by asserting that this was how things worked in America, with pimps supposedly looking after the girls and providing for their needs. This distorted perspective on power dynamics and relationships further perpetuated the manipulation. This began the start of a long journey to many different countries, all while being forced to work as he demanded.

He used fear and intimidation to control her, threatening her family's safety and showing her that he had connections within the police force. This left Kay feeling helpless and unable to seek help from authorities

Despite the constant abuse and manipulation, Kay's resilience and determination to protect her family led her to make difficult decisions. She kept her family in the dark about her situation, fearing that they would retaliate and potentially put themselves in danger. Kay's desire to shield her loved ones from harm, even at the cost of her own well-being, highlights the selflessness and strength of victims in these situations.


Kay’s resilience and escape

Kay expresses her initial fear of her abuser and the consequences she believed would follow if she were to seek help or involve her family. This fear is not unfounded, as she had heard stories from other girls who had attempted to escape and faced severe punishment as a result. The abuser had successfully instilled a sense of fear and powerlessness in Kay, making her believe that her family would also be at risk if she were to disclose the truth.

Eventually, Kay found herself in a situation where she had the opportunity to disclose the truth to law enforcement when returning to Sydney to renew her Visa. The realization that her abuser had been using fake identities and had a history of criminal activity helped her connect the dots and understand the gravity of the situation. The authorities sought her assistance in capturing her abuser, recognizing the valuable role she could play in bringing him to justice.

Despite her initial hesitation, Kay agreed to cooperate with law enforcement. With her help, including having to testify in front of him - he was found guilty of 40 charges, and sentenced to 27 years in prison. 


Overcoming Trauma with Courage

Brad and Kay discuss how her courage played a key factor in her overcoming some of the trauma. By flying out to America, and working with the police to eventually catch, arrest and sentence her abuser, Kay was able to start her healing journey – and this was something that took immense courage.

Another turning point in Kay's healing journey occurred when she decided to confront someone from her past who had sexually abused her. Despite the lack of support from those close to her, Kay refused to accept that her abuse was something that simply happens to women. By confronting her abuser, she took control of her narrative and began her journey towards healing.

The act of confronting her abuser not only required immense courage but also provided Kay with a sense of empowerment and closure. It marked the beginning of her real healing journey, allowing her to address the trauma she had endured and reclaim her power. Through this experience, Kay demonstrates the transformative power of courage in overcoming trauma.


Starting a Business and Brand

Kay had always wanted her own business. She wanted to create a brand that she could be proud of, one that stands out in the market. She chose lingerie as her focus because it allowed her to connect with her own sexuality and femininity in a positive way. Lingerie became a tool for her own healing journey and a means to empower other women. Through her brand, she aims to create a space where women can reconnect with their femininity, embrace their sexuality, and liberate themselves from whatever is holding them back.
